Banks use AI to determine whether to extend credit, and how much, to customers. Radiology departments deploy AI to help distinguish between healthy tissue and tumors. And HR teams employ it to work out which of hundreds of resumes should be sent on to recruiters. These are just a few examples of how AI is being adopted across industries. And with so much at stake, businesses and governments adopting AI and machine learning are increasingly being pressed to lift the veil on how their AI models make decisions.

Cvijetic, senior manager of autonomous vehicles at NVIDIA, drives our NVIDIA DRIVE Labs series of videos and blogs breaking down the science behind autonomous vehicles. A Serbian-American electrical engineer, Cvijetic seems destined for this role. She literally grew up in the shadow of Nikola Tesla. Ensuring the quality of each one is a top priority, but not easy. The disk drive manufacturing process is incredibly complex. For example, it takes 1,400 steps just to manufacture the drive head. Even the smallest errors can lead to product flaws. "Mistakes are costly," said Raghavan Srinivasan, senior director of global marketing at Seagate, which makes more disk drives than any other manufacturer. "If there are any anomalies, we're going to end up with poor yield later on, and we wouldn't know that until the long process is completed."

Bringing a new medical treatment to market is a slow, laborious process -- and for a good reason: patient safety is the top priority. But when recruiting patients to test promising treatments in clinical trials, the faster the better. "Many people in medicine have ideas of how to improve healthcare," said Wout Brusselaers, CEO of Pasadena, Calif.-based startup Deep 6 AI. "What's stopping them is being able to demonstrate that their new process or new drug works, and is safe and effective on real patients. For that, they need the clinical trial process."

Tuberculosis is an issue close to home for Pune, India-based healthcare startup DeepTek. India has the world's highest prevalence of the disease -- accounting for over one-quarter of the 10 million new cases each year. It's a fitting first project for the company, whose founders hope to greatly improve global access to medical imaging diagnostics with an AI-powered radiology platform. India aims to eradicate TB by 2025, five years before the United Nations' global goal to end the epidemic by 2030. Chest X-ray imaging is the most sensitive screening tool for pulmonary TB, helping clinicians determine which patients should be referred for further lab testing.

The convergence of AI, 5G and edge computing is unleashing unprecedented opportunities for retailers in areas like customer experience and smarter AI-enabled stores. Attendees of NRF 2020, the world's largest retail expo, taking place Jan. 12-14 in New York, can see how NVIDIA is working with some of the most innovative solution providers to re-invent the retail industry. Spell, founded by Serkan Piantino, is making machine learning as easy as ABC. Piantino, CEO of the New York-based startup and former director of engineering for Facebook AI Research, explained to AI Podcast host Noah Kravitz how he's bringing compute power to those that don't have easy access to GPU clusters. Spell provides access to hardware as well as a software interface that accelerates execution. Piantino reported that a wide variety of industries has shown interest in Spell, from healthcare to retail, as well as researchers and academia.
